“Contraflow” is a British transport engineering term, depicting lanes of traffic flowing in the opposite direction of surrounding lanes. The State of Louisiana’s Contraflow Plan grew out of evacuation challenges experienced during Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Two years into the research of the Hurricane Katrina Response in ’07, M. D. Woods realized that the westward flow of tens of thousands of Katrina Survivors represented a surreal real life Contraflow; e.g., The Contraflow Project (TCP).

Woods, who launched the Afromation Movement to Integrate American History in Seattle on March 26, 1994, watched along with a billion people the humanitarian crisis on the bayou called “Katrina.” Black culture, people homeless and social injustice? This was a trifecta for Afromation. On September 7, 2005, all focus was redirected on New Orleans. After one year of serving in the Katrina Relief Efforts, Woods returned to Nevada. Two days later, a call came in urging him to return…

New Orleans being like a beautiful Creole woman, what man could say no? In the fall of ’06, Woods began to think about an interview he conducted with two Delta Airlines VPs, Captains Kolshak and Quiello; taking him for the first time outside of Black/Creole New Orleans mindset. In Dec. ’06, he set out from (MSY) on a Katrina Responders fact-finding mission to San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta and Memphis. Woods was moved by their Katrina experiences.

What started out in ’05 as Afromation responding to assist fellow Americans in dire need, has led to arguable the largest and most successful independent documentation of what really happened in and around New Orleans during Katrina. The good news? Woods’ beautiful mind has a tight grasp on this forthcoming CONTRAFLOW book series; the 7-part story of Katrina. The challenging news? It’ll never see the light of day without new financial support.

Plans are to revisit the same ’06 cities in, “7 Cities for 7 Books” TCP Funding Campaign. This time it’ll be a fact-giving mission. Instead of interviewing the responders, Woods will provide interviews and give presentations. A GoFundMe page will be provided to the local media outlets that he appears on as a way for the “crowd” to respond and support our endeavor to tell the story of the 2nd biggest event of the American 21st Century.

This funding drive will run through May 16, 2019; the 5,000th day anniversary of Afromation’s involvement in Post-Katrina New Orleans. It’ll be conducted in memory of TCP Director Emeritus Frederic Willis, the benefactor of our year one odyssey and enlightenment (’05/’06) down in the GNO disaster zone. Here is the link to TCP’s Funding Letter. Financial donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
